Neil Patrick Harris is a big fan of Sleep No More, the exhilarating, immersive theater piece that’s taken up residence in Chelsea for the past few years. And on Monday, he made a cameo appearance at the “McKittrick Hotel,” Sleep No More‘s sprawling performance space (as part of an event for Citi ThankYou cardmembers). We were allotted six minutes to chat with NPH about the interactive experience, along with a few of his other (many!) upcoming projects and the sad, sad end of How I Met Your Mother.

This isn’t your first time doing Sleep No More, yes? I did it a few years ago for fun, just to do it. And I did just a small part of The Porter track. It was part of the hotel side of things. It was super intense and really exciting and mentally mind-effy. So I’m happy to be back.

What is it about an immersive experience like Sleep No More that you like as an actor? It’s the same and yet every show is going to be different because there’s a different audience and sometimes they will follow you while you’re performing. And I’m speaking for people I don’t know because I’ve never done it, but sometimes fifty people will be watching you do a scene and, on another note, only two. And sometimes they’ll be rowdy and sometimes they’ll be quiet and, hopefully, always respectful. But I think you have to get into some kind of zone. The [actors] are downstairs and they’ve been downstairs for an hour and a half already doing physical warm ups of a really intense sort. They’re like a tribe of people. That inspires me.

You’ve seen the performance a number of times. What is it like, as an actor, to walk into something like Sleep No More as a participant? It’s magnificent. Everyone wears masks, so you’re totally anonymous as you wander around, but it really frees you up to observe more with less abandon. No, with more abandon, right? Because you can be more voracious if you’re really into something. You can really feel it and not have to worry about people observing you feeling it. Which I suppose might be unique to me.

What role are you playing tonight? I’m “Man In Bar.” I’m going to be welcoming everyone and making them feel comfortable before their experience. So, I’m not really doing—these tracks, they’re ridiculously talented. They have to learn dances, fight choreography, and all kinds of things, and I don’t have the time to do that.

And you’ll be going back to theater in the spring? Yes, I’ll be doing [Hedwig And The Angry Inch] in March. Read More

The milestone 200th episode of How I Met Your Mother, entitled “How Your Mother Met Me,” will air on Monday, Jan. 27 as Season 9, the show’s last, continues toward its March 31 series finale. Fans already knew that the episode would focus almost solely on The Mother (Cristin Milioti), but thanks to Cobie Smulders, who plays Robin Scherbatsky, we now have much more detail about the landmark installment.

“We finally get to see what happened at the club with the yellow umbrella!” Smulders told TV Guide Canada in reference to the Season 3 episode “No Tomorrow” in which Ted picked up the yellow umbrella (which she presumably left there) after the St. Patrick’s Day party that he and his future bride both attended. Ted later leaves the umbrella at The Mother’s apartment when he briefly dates her roommate, Cindy (Rachel Bilson).

Smulders also revealed that the episode mostly contains flashbacks that show The Mother’s life during the past eight-plus seasons of the show.

“It’s basically what’s been going on in her life the last nine years,” she said. “We get to kind of see how [she and Ted] just miss each other…That episode is a lot about tying up loose ends and showing fans what they want to see.”

Smulders also shared her enthusiasm about Milioti‘s big episode.

“I’m so excited she gets a whole episode!” she said. “I feel like she’s always in these quick scenes with us, and she never gets a chance to shin

Cristin Milioti may have made her debut as the Mother on How I Met Your Mother’s season finale last May, but she only spoke one line, asking for a train ticket to Farhampton, where Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) were getting married. Die-hard fans of the long-running show had to wait until Monday night’s Season 9 premiere to learn what happened when the Mother — she still doesn’t have a name — got on that train. (And speaking of trains, you’ll want to get off this one if you don’t want to read any of the MAJOR SPOILERS that lie ahead.)

As the promos for the episode had already revealed, that train is where the Mother met Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), one of the closest friends of the Mother’s future husband Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor). In an interview with BuzzFeed last month, Milioti said the episode, titled “The Locket,” was a blur for her, but not for the reason you may expect. Best known for her Tony-nominated role in the Broadway musical Once, the 28-year-old hadn’t really watched HIMYM until executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas cast her in the role last March — and then she promptly spent her summer binge-watching all eight seasons. So while Hannigan and the crew were thrilled to finally get to work with the Mother, she had a different reaction to her first real day on set in July. “It’s so weird,” she said with a laugh. “I think they were like, ‘Oh my god, this is a scene with the Mother!’ But for me, I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m getting a scene with Lily!’ It’s so different for me!”

Milioti, a New Jersey native and professed die-hard New Yorker, noted that the biggest revelation for her in the scene was how clean the train was. “That’s a way clean Metro North car,” she said. “There were no beer bottles or urine rolling up and down the aisles. Yeah, Metro North is not a good place to be.” (For the geography sticklers among you, since Farhampton is a totally made-up place, the Metro North train could totally go there.)

But the actress was especially impressed that the production went to the trouble of procuring an authentic New York treat with the cookies the Mother had with her on the train. “They were Tate’s!” she said, her already enormous eyes getting wider. “Tate’s is a New York cookie! They’re that detailed, even down to the props. I’m not a softy, chewy [cookie] fan, and these are in all the delis in New York. They’re so good.”
